Nadal: "I aspire to everything, though the favorite is always Federer”
BY JOAN SOLSONA
How do you feel about playing the last ‘Grand Slam’ of the year?
I feel my game better than the previous tournaments. The one month stop after Wimbledon affected my game, it’s always complicated, however, I can say now that I feel the good sensations back when I hit the ball.
What happened in the two previous Masters Series?
Well, I lost in the third round and quarterfinals. I can’t say it was awful because I played better in Cincinatti. I take those Masters as if I had played some matches for my preparation to the US Open.
Why did you decide to be out of competition for so long, without playing Bastad and Stuttgart, where you were the defending champion?
I’m not sure if physically was tired but mentally I was. I had to pass through so much pressure during three months playing claycourt tournaments. The best for me was to stop so that I would be able to face up the second part of the season in the best conditions.
Are you going to measure yourself for 2006?
There is still too much time left and it will depend on the results. I want to play all the tournaments possible for me on clay.
When Wimbledon finalized had you already put your sight on the US Open?
I had, unconsciously. I was only thinking in New York, where I aim to reach as fas as possible after three years where things weren’t working well for me.
Have you aimed a round for the Grand Slam?
I must aspire to everything. I’ve been practicing for weeks. For me, the most important thing is to play well. If you do, you get the chances to win on any surface. I have proven myself that I can give a good performance on hard court, for example. I had win in Montreal, Madrid, Pekin...
If you check out the draw, you see there is not any Blake, Haas or Berdych, who might bother you on your way through the final.
In a ‘Grand Slam’, any player can give you a surprise and you always must be aware, starting for the first meeting against Philippoussis.
Is the Aussie the toughest rival you could ever play against for a debut?
If I want to win, I will have to be at 100% from the first point.
The previous tournaments had shown the new generation of young talents which you lead, such Gasquet, Murray or Berdych?
I don’t think it is something new. They already have shown their quality for playing.
You think Ferrero can be considered again at the top positions of the ranking after the final he played in Cincy?
When you have been the world number one, you have tennis without any doubt. Perhaps he lacked some regularity and I hope he can have it back again.
Federer is again the best candidate to the title at the ‘Big Apple’?
He is the favorite in all the tournaments where he participates.
The organization of the US Open always schedule their favorite players to play at the night time, away from the heat and humidity. Have you been scheduled to play at some favorite time for New York?
I don’t care. I do not have preferences about that.
This tournament is special because it is Andre Agassi’s farewell, who retires of professional tennis at the age of 36.
Everybody is excited about him, and I am the first. To have been at the top positions for so long is something commendable. He has an incredible career path.
You have assured your presence at the Masters Cup and the world number two position. What is your main goal until the end of the year?
I don’t look any further than US Open. Anyhow, I’m conscious that after US Open there is Davis Cup against Italy and Spain must stay in the World Group.
Do you feel like coming back after having to pull out due to an injury during the first round against Belarus?
Yes, this competition has always motivated me and I’d love to play it if the Captain counts on me.
